On an early spring day in April 1979, Edward Hodges captured Conrail’s “Clinton Local” southbound at milepost 31, a few miles north of Tecumseh, Michigan. The tired old ex-New York Central GP-7 is pulling a string of boxcars loaded with disc brake parts from the Budd Company’s facility in Clinton.
The south side of the milepost proclaims “J 31”, indicating the distance in miles to Jackson, Mich., a destination which this line hasn’t reached since before 1960. The other side of the milepost would read “L 11”, the distance to Lenawee Junction.
Conrail GP-7 #5627 was built for the New York Central by EMD in July 1951, later serving Penn Central and Conrail under the same number. By February of 1980, it would be pictured stored, out of service, at Juniata, Penn.
