A classic Santa Fe boxcar is ahead of Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad caboose #103 as a DT&I freight rolls northbound on 02 November 1981. Ed Hodges photographed the train at the Exeter Road crossing west of Carleton, Michigan. The crew will be looking forward to the end of their run—the DT&I’s large yard at Flat Rock lies less than 10 miles from here.

By this time, the use of the caboose was in its twilight, and #103 would soon be retired. It was sold onward to the Huron & Eastern Railroad as their #650, and is now displayed as DT&I 650 in Arcadia, MO.
