Conrail local southbound at Lenawee Junction, Michigan on 17 November 1980. Edward Hodges photo

On a grey autumn day in Michigan some 45 years ago, Conrail GP-8 #5457 and caboose CR #19865 have entered the “Old Road” at Lenawee Junction, and are departing for Blissfield and Toledo over the Lenawee Highway crossing.

It’s November 17, 1980, and photographer Edward Hodges has been following the train from Clinton, Mich. on the Clinton Branch. At this time the “Clinton Local” was still running all the way south to Toledo three times, a week, returning on the second day. There was little traffic left on the Clinton line, following the switch to trucks by the Budd Company plant in Clinton.

The little train has attracted the attention of a local boy on a bicycle, and the engineer waves to the photographer. The track here remains in use today, operated by the Adrian & Blissfield Railroad.
