On the afternoon of 09 April 1981, Edward Hodges was in Chelsea, Michigan, where he happened upon Conrail’s local switching the Chelsea Milling Company plant. The Chelsea Milling Company is a family-operated business based in Chelsea, Michigan, that has been producing Jiffy baking mixes and other food products for over 80 years.

Conrail GP15-1 #1627 is busy switching covered hoppers of raw materials on the north side of the ex-NYC/MC main line. The unit is less than 2 years old at the time, having been delivered from EMD in October 1979. It would be transferred to Norfolk Southern at the time of the Conrail split, and in 2024 was still in service on the Genesee & Wyoming’s York Railroad in Pennsylvania.
