CR 5903 n.b. near Tecumseh, MI on 1982.02.27

On 27 February 1982, Conrail GP-7 #5903 is at the front of a northbound freight train on Conrail’s Clinton Secondary line, just south of Tecumseh, Michigan. Have derailed near this point on the previous day due to an iced-over crossing, the locomotive is back on the tracks and ready to finish its run.

This would be the second-to-last freight train on the line, with only a “clean-up” run still to happen on 11 March.

Number 5903 is on “home rails”, having been built for the New York Central Railroad in May 1953. We don’t know how many times she previously operated over this line, which was the NYC’s Jackson Branch, but chances are that she’s been here before.

Time was running out, not only for the Clinton Branch, but also #5903. A year later she was in Conrail’s scrap line at Altoona, Pennsylvania.
