Conrail southbound at Alexis Tower, Toledo, OH January 1982

On a bleak weekend day in January 1982, Conrail GP-15-1 #1682 leads a southbound train of empty coal hoppers across the Chessie System (C&O) diamond at Alexis Tower in Toledo, Ohio.

I had just received my first 35mm camera for Christmas a few weeks earlier, and was experimenting with black-and-white film. My recently-acquired driver’s license allowed me to take my parent’s Caprice Classic to do some railfanning for an hour or two while they shopped at the nearby North Towne Square Mall.

Historical weather data shows that January 1982 was a very cold month, with temperatures reaching -17°F. This was certainly one of those bone-chilling days.

After a few rolls of film I left my black-and-white days behind and only shot color slides until converting to digital photography in 1999.
