In the 1980s, a Christmas tradition in Tecumseh, MI was the annual “Christmas Walk”, sponsored by the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce. Held on a Saturday evening, local shops stayed open late, the streets were decorated, Santa was present, and people could stroll the sidewalks, doing Christmas shopping and taking in the holiday atmosphere.
On 05 December 1987, with new cabooses on hand, the Southern Michigan Railroad took part in the event.
NYC caboose #21692 was chosen for display. Society volunteers decorated the inside and outside of the caboose, and Plymouth O&M #57 set out from Clinton to pull the caboose to Tecumseh.
Parked next to Cal’s Tog Shop at Chicago Boulevard, visitors to the Christmas Walk were invited to board the brightly-lit caboose and have a look at the interior. Inside it was toasty warm thanks to the oil stove, and visitors could purchase SMRS souvenirs and also enjoy a hot cup of coffee. #57 idled away, keeping warm for a return to Clinton later that night. It would mark the end of a busy year for the SMRS.
