As the last rays of the late December afternoon sun fall on Tecumseh, Michigan, Conrail’s “Clinton Local”, has just crossed M-50 and is moving south alongside S. Evans Street. Tecumseh’s fire station is momentarily blocked as the train passes.

Edward Hodges photographed Conrail GP-8 #5457 (an ex-Erie Lackawanna unit rebuilt at Paducah, Kentucky) and caboose CR 19865 (an ex-New Haven car) on 15 December 1980. At this time, the Budd Company plant in Clinton had just stopped shipping by rail and freight traffic on the line had all but evaporated. The Clinton Local was still called to work on a daily basis, and most days it would operate south to Lenawee Junction and return to Clinton with just the locomotive and caboose.
